Confessed Dothan killer arrested again, could return to prison

1+ day, 1+ hour ago (292+ words) DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter could be returned to prison after his latest arrest this weekend. Dothan police officers booked Tayshawn Malik Stevenson, 29, into the city jail on Saturday morning. He faces charges of attempting to elude, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. Those charges may be the least of his concerns because, as a convicted killer, he could be returned to the Alabama Department of Corrections to complete a 15-year sentence on his prior charge. Court records show that a judge ordered Stevenson to serve three years of that sentence behind bars, followed by probation. Stevenson pleaded guilty to manslaughter, though he was initially charged with murder. Prosecutor to review case Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman said his office will review Stevenson's latest charges when the police report reaches his office next week....

Firefighters battle 11 blazes single day. “Even a sprak can start fire.”

1+ day, 14+ hour ago (180+ words) While rain is predicted for the coming week, the amounts are not expected to significantly alleviate the dry conditions. WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WTVY) -Dry conditions continue to strain firefighter resources, including those in Washington County, Florida, where emergency crews responded to 11 fires on Friday, 11 of which were outdoors. "Along with the ongoing drought, the area is experiencing gusty winds and low humidity, creating an environment where fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly," Washington County Fire Services said in a statement. "Even the smallest ember or spark has the potential to develop into a fast-moving wildfire." It's not just the Florida panhandle that is suffering from a lack of rain. Other parts of the state, along with Alabama and Georgia, are parched. Many areas have burn bans in place. While rain is predicted for the coming week, the amounts are…...

What we do and don’t know about the shooting of 2 National Guard members in DC

1+ day, 20+ hour ago (942+ words) Officials say the suspect in Wednesday's attack is an Afghan national, and some details have been released about the two Guard members, one of whom has died. The motive for the attack was not clear. Here's what we know so far and what we don't know: President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, had died from her injuries. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was in "very critical condition," Gov. Patrick Morrisey, R-W.Va., said Friday. They were deployed as part of Trump's crime-fighting mission that involved taking over the District of Columbia's police department. Beckstrom and Wolfe had been on orders in Washington since August, according to the West Virginia National Guard. Deputies surprise drivers with turkeys instead of traffic tickets for Thanksgiving

1+ day, 23+ hour ago (238+ words) LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC/Gray News) - Drivers in one Louisiana community received a surprise during traffic stops Wednesday morning. Deputies with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office handed out Thanksgiving turkeys instead of writing tickets for minor violations. The holiday outreach is part of an annual program to help families in need and show a different side of law enforcement. "In law enforcement, it's important to have good community relations. Relationships matter. This is an opportunity for us to go out and spread good community cheer, just to let people see that. It's the holidays, it's a way to give back," Sheriff Stitch Guillory said. Deputies began loading and bagging the turkeys before heading out around 8:30 a.m. to surprise drivers across the parish. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many drivers thrilled to receive a Thanksgiving turkey rather than a citation. "It…...

‘Operation Safe Return’ plans to warm up Alabama cold cases with billboards

1+ day, 23+ hour ago (189+ words) MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - You'll likely see more billboards to increase awareness of missing people and cold cases thanks to Alabama Cold Case Advocacy's "Operation Safe Return." "Our followers were talking about we need to go back to the milk carton days, and so it just kind of set a light bulb off, what does that look like? Well billboards are the modern-day milk carton," explained Kari New, the organization's founder. The plan is to put both static and digital billboard PSAs in strategic locations across Alabama. "The goal is to put the billboard as close as possible to where a disappearance occurred," New said. "Then we'll pick a high traffic area that makes geographical sense." New adds that they need your help to bring this initiative to life. "We're in the fundraising phase at this point," she said. "You can…...
